frisch Beutel – Bags and packs from Hesse

What began as a final project at the university was realized in 'real life' with a first "gym bag" and expanded into a bag manufacturer with its own workshop in Frankfurt. frisch Beutel has been producing bags, backpacks and accessories from the natural materials cork and leather since 2015. With an exciting mix of materials and a clean design. In Hessen. For the world.

frisch Beutel founders Lisa Frisch and Katharina (Katha) Pfaff have known each other since school, studied fashion and communication design together and knew exactly what they wanted. A sustainable label for unusual accessories with a clear focus on stylish and simple design. As part of the joint bachelor thesis at the University of Trier, the fictitious fashion label ‘frisch’ was created and finally tested in the hometown of Speyer. Lisa (fashion design) took care of the materials and sewed, while Katharina (communication design) set up the online shop. After a successful test phase, bags have moved to Frankfurt. First in her treehouse, then in her own studio in the station district.

Designed with passion. Made in Hesse.

From the first design idea to the last stitch – every single step of the bag production is Made in Hessen. This ensures a transparent and sustainable manufacturing process for all products. Small print runs ensure that there is no overproduction. A restriction to regional production facilities and leather dealers keeps the transport routes short. Plus: The Made in Hessen production provides urgently needed support for the regional handicraft industry.

We want to strengthen people’s awareness of origin, material and craftsmanship and support local craftsmanship.

Take Offenbach as an example: Formerly known as the city of bag makers, the bag maker profession is now threatened with extinction. And in neighboring Offenbach, the founders found support when the demand for fresh bag(s) was no longer feasible for the two of them alone. Three women are the fourth generation to run a leather processing family business. Here the knowledge and the machines are available that are needed for production according to Lisa and Katharina’s ideas. Backpacks, mobile phone cases, fanny packs and shoulder bags are lovingly handcrafted here in many individual steps. So perfect that models are also developed together with the bag makers.

High quality materials meet limited editions – fresh pouch is a statement against mass production.

In addition to leather from sustainable production by Hessian leather dealers who work with Italian tanneries, cork and apple leather are used as vegan leather alternatives. Good to know: Apple leather is made from 50 percent apple pomace and therefore contains less plastic than many other vegan materials.

The material contrasts through the use of different leathers are iconic. Key word: Suede leather meets embossed leather meets smooth leather. In order to offer these contrasts a sufficient stage, the cuts of the bag and backpack models are appropriately clean and reserved. Each piece is – by the way – unique. Because deviations in structure and grain, small bumps and color differences are natural materials.Despite the high-quality materials and regional production, it was important from the start to be able to offer the fresh bags at affordable prices. Should as many people as possible have access to the bags of all colors.
