an.ju studio – Studio for handmade leather goods

an.ju studio stands for Anna and Justine. Together, Anna Eham and Justine Nessi are the creators of the Munich leather studio an.ju studio. And together, the two see themselves as a cross-generational creative duo who want to keep the (somewhat forgotten) craftsmanship of fine leather making alive in combination with sustainability.

Justine Nessi is a designer and artist. After studying architecture and design in Paris, she worked as an architect in her native France for ten years until she changed careers in 2015 and turned her passion into a profession. The result? Justine opened l’Atelier in 2017. Since then, she has been living out her passion for leather craftsmanship, which she learned in Florence, in her shop-studio an.ju studio at Türkenstrasse 76 in Munich.

She continues to do so today together with Anna Eham, who came to Munich from Vienna in 2020 for an internship with Justine as part of her training as a fine leather maker. It quickly became clear that the two shared a passion for design and leather craftsmanship. And that’s why l’Atelier became an.ju studio in 2022. ANna and JUstine. The two craftswomen are separated by 33 years. A whole generation. But their passion for leather is the same. And so the creative duo develops minimalist bags and leather accessories together with uncomplicated functions and relevant details such as the interior, which can be made from leftover materials from haute couture as well as Japanese paper. It is produced from high-quality materials in the Munich studio. By hand.

Our mission is to create very special pieces that cannot be found anywhere else.

Made by hand. Made in Munich. The timelessly beautiful reduced shoppers, crossbody bags, pouch bags, simply all bags, can be made individually: larger, smaller, in a different color. Even custom-made items that are not available in the shop can be realized together to make long-loved favorite pieces from the nappa leather you love. Also possible with personalization.

Our goal is to offer an alternative to the rapid changes in fast fashion.

Apart from the fact that Anna and Justine focus on timeless shapes that never go out of fashion, it is important to them to keep the valuable material in circulation for as long as possible. To this end, they have launched the “FORGET ME NOT” project. Leather is a very durable material that becomes more beautiful over time. That is why Anna and Justine reuse high-quality, used bags, refurbish them, add details and turn them into new favorite pieces. This reduces CO2 emissions, waste and the consumption of new resources.

Sustainability is of central importance to the an.ju studio and is integrated into every step of the work process. The studio stands for quality, longevity, local economic development and environmental awareness.

The used leather comes from various sources:

  • It is tanned in Italy and comes from a traditional Italian tannery that is a member of the Leather Working Group. These suppliers are subject to strict guidelines regarding environmental impact, social standards and traceability.
  • It is sourced from leftover haute couture stock.
  • The vegetable-tanned leather comes from a German tannery that only processes leather from animals slaughtered in an organic-certified slaughterhouse.

We don’t want our grandparents’ old pieces to gather dust in the back of the closet, but to be used and worn with passion.

And how do these vintage cars find their way to an.ju studio? It’s simple: through us. Many women have heirlooms in their closets, usually made of exotic materials, that they don’t wear but can’t give away for sentimental reasons. At an.ju studio, these are lovingly reworked favorite pieces that can delight future generations.
