These days, I find that I take an extra moment<\/strong> to savour simple things<\/strong>\u2026the first sip of a frothy chai latte in a mug bearing the grins of a niece and nephew, the watercolor beauty of a sunset on the horizon<\/strong>, the warm smile and wave of a neighbour across the street, and even, getting dressed in the morning. It\u2019s not about the fun of choosing something just-right<\/strong> for an occasion or in the triumph of a great new wardrobe combo<\/strong>, it\u2019s about the memories.<\/p>\n

The things I treasure most in my closet all have stories<\/strong>. Putting them on takes me back to the moment when I unwrapped a gift perfectly chosen<\/strong>, shared laughs with a friend on a shopping outing, or explored a far-flung corner of the globe with loved ones. In our world<\/strong> today \u2013 where we must keep our distance from one another \u2013 these memories<\/strong> make me feel connected to those I care about.<\/p>\n

This sentiment is exactly what Sabine and I were yearning to create when we embarked on Friends That Rhyme<\/strong> (Sabine\u2026Nadine\u2026friends\u2026yup). We both love great experiences and we were on one such adventure<\/strong> together in Japan when we stumbled across a little antique store that was stuffed to the literal rafters with goodies. Tucked away in a corner were the most sumptuous vintage obi sashes<\/strong> \u2013 richly coloured silks with intricate embroidery \u2013 just begging to come home with us. And, so, without having the first clue what we would do with those \u2018kimono belts\u2019<\/strong>, we added a few to our suitcases and headed back to Beijing.<\/p>\n

Our husbands were both posted in the mega-city<\/strong> with their jobs for a few years and Sabine and I met through our children\u2019s school and neighbourhood. Pressing pause on our respective careers<\/strong> (in Belgium for Sabine and Canada for me) gave us both the time and energy to say yes to all sorts of amazing things<\/strong> \u2013 volunteer efforts, cooking class escapades, new friendships, the twists and turns of city streets and Great Wall hikes, and the creation of a small business<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

We use vintage textiles because they have a history and still have a future.<\/h2>\n

In the end, we transformed<\/strong> those incredible obi sashes into clutches and wristlets. Ever since the beginning, we have been steadfast in our desire<\/strong> to make things of quality and to do it in a way that is mindful and with purpose<\/strong>. We use vintage textiles because they have a history and still have a future. With the obi, you can practically imagine them elaborately knotted<\/strong>, adorning the back of an elegant Japanese woman delicately picking her way through cherry blossom-lined streets<\/strong>. Pre-loved, yes, but we\u2019re able to cut around any marks that time has bestowed on these wonderful pieces.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve always worked with independent tailors<\/strong> and tailoresses<\/strong> and are incredibly proud that our primary production partner is a social enterprise<\/strong> in Germany (where Sabine now lives) that not only employs refugees<\/strong> but also provides much-needed camaraderie.<\/strong> The laughter and chatter in their studio, as the smells of a delicious traditional lunch spread waft through the air, warms the heart. These women have amazing stories<\/strong> and we are honoured to be a part of their community.<\/p>\n

So those are the memories already embedded<\/strong> in each of our upcycled, handmade accessories. The next chapters of the story are written by those who choose them, gift them, receive them, and treasure them<\/strong> in their closets.<\/p>\n
