FAST FASHION FACTS<\/h2>\n

From the first moment of production to the disposal<\/strong>, fast fashion has an immense influence<\/strong> on the climate. The textile industry is the second greatest environmental polluter<\/strong>: Soils are polluted and rendered useless through the pesticides used in cotton cultivation. Rivers and seas are polluted<\/strong> by the waste water from dyeing processes. Want numbers? We are talking about 20 percent<\/strong> of the world’s industrial water pollution.<\/p>\n

\u201eBAD news:
\nFast Fashion is killing the climate.<\/span>\u201c<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

60 percent<\/strong> of all garments contain polyester, which in form of microplastics<\/strong> threaten ocean wildlife<\/strong>. From 8.3 million tons<\/strong> of polyester in 2000, the use of polyester has increased to approximately 21.3 million tons<\/strong> (157 percent) in 2016. Bad news<\/strong>: Jeans are the dirtiest garments of all. At least 7,000 liters of water<\/strong> are needed to produce a pair of jeans \u2013 not to mention the chemicals. The list goes on.<\/p>\n

But what does that have to do with us? It has a lot<\/strong> to do with us because our consumer behavior has a very big impact<\/strong> on this issue: sales of clothing almost doubled between 2002 and 2015<\/strong>. German consumers buy an average of 60 garments per year<\/strong>. But clothes are worn for only half as long as 15 years<\/strong> ago. The rest ends up (often unworn) in now overflowing landfills<\/strong>. Recycling? Yes, but even that is limited. We simply produce and consume too much<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

You don’t have to be an activist<\/strong> to set an example. This is about awareness, about appreciation, about the will to change<\/strong> your behavior. And every little step counts.<\/strong> It can be done with small things and in everyday life<\/strong>. Here are some tips that anyone can put into practice:<\/p>\n

Read labels<\/h2>\n

Labels provide the most important information about the fabrics. Organic cotton, Modal, Pi\u00f1atex<\/strong> or Appleskin<\/strong> are some of the natural materials that are kind to the skin and nature. Certified materials such as GOTS, OEKO-TEX\u00ae<\/a> <\/strong>certify that no toxic chemicals<\/strong> have been used. Also be sure to check information about production on the website.<\/p>\n

Quality instead of quantity<\/h2>\n

High-quality, timeless clothing<\/strong> remains in the cycle longer than cheap, fast trend parts.<\/p>\n

Repairing fashion<\/h2>\n

Sew on buttons, repair the trouser hem \u2013 \u00a0if you can’t do it yourself, go to the nearest tailor<\/strong>. Works great too: the odd older lady (check Kleinanzeigen or nachbarn.de<\/strong>) is happy to receive extra money. Some brands like Nudie Jeans offer a (free!) life-long repair service. Important<\/strong>: Textiles do NOT belong in the garbage!<\/p>\n

Buy used fashion<\/h2>\n

It doesn’t always have to be new \u2013 vintage and second-hand shops<\/strong> are real treasure chests for grateful buyers<\/strong> looking for unusual pieces and well-preserved classics. Advantage<\/strong>: These garments and accessories stay in circulation longer.<\/p>\n

Swap fashion<\/h2>\n

Former favorite pieces<\/strong> find enthusiastic buyers at private or public swap parties without the need for new resources<\/strong>. Good to know<\/strong>: Fashion Revolution Week 2020 plans to throw the biggest clothing exchange<\/strong> party<\/strong> in history.<\/p>\n

Rent fashion<\/h2>\n

Borrowing clothes reduces the ecological footprint by 70 percent<\/strong>. New styling inspirations and cleaner wardrobe included. Try it out now at Stay Awhile<\/a> and Unown<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Washing<\/h2>\n

What also needs to be considered is that part of the ecological footprint<\/strong> originates with the consumer. Among other things, this is due to incorrect washing <\/strong>and outdated washing habits<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Good to know<\/strong>: Washing balls replace or at least reduce the amount of detergent can be used to help keep the water cleaner. Clothing bags<\/strong> (e.g. Guppy Friend) collect the microplastic in synthetic fabrics.<\/p>\n
