Solidarity with the textile workers in Bangladesh<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

In use?<\/span><\/span> The police, tear gas, a burning bus.<\/span><\/span> Chaos.<\/span><\/span> Understandable anger.<\/span><\/span> Despair.<\/span><\/span> Fright.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Stop<\/p>\n

This system of exploitation, disregard and mistreatment is only possible because we support cheap fast and ultra fast fashion.<\/span><\/span> These clothes are too cheap.<\/span><\/span> Too cheap to pay textile workers the wages they need to survive.<\/span><\/span> Stop buying cheap sh*t!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A quick look at systematic exploitation<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

Bangladesh is one of the poorest countries in the world.<\/span><\/span>
\nPoverty makes cheap wages possible.<\/span><\/span> You depend on it.<\/span><\/span>
\nBangladesh is the second largest garment exporter in the world<\/span><\/span>
\n80 percent of Bangladesh’s export earnings come from the textile industry<\/span><\/span>
\nOver 4 million people, including 3.2 million women, make their living from the textile industry<\/span><\/span>
\nSeamstresses have to work up to 100 hours of overtime per month to make a living<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And why?!<\/span><\/span> So that we in the Global North can buy masses of cheap (st) clothing that is far too often thrown away after a very short time.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A living wage is a fundamental human right and not a \u201cnice to have\u201d. We cannot allow this to continue.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n

\"Stop<\/h2>\n

Let’s take responsibility<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

Almost 70 years ago, the textile industry relocated to the Global South because we no longer wanted to produce in this country.<\/span><\/span> We caused the disaster there and must therefore take responsibility.<\/span><\/span> Workers need a living wage to support their families.<\/span><\/span> This works especially if we as consumers, as well as the large textile producing companies such as H&M, Mango, Zara \/ Inditex, Primark, Shein, Boohoo, are prepared to spend more money.<\/span><\/span> The consumers by buying clothing that was produced fairly and the companies for the people who produce their goods.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

That\u2019s why we need a sensibly drafted supply chain law<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

The workers need our support.<\/span><\/span>
\nFor this reason:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>
\nBe loud and share this information.<\/span><\/span> Good sources include Delara Burkhardt<\/a>, our voice in the European Parliament, when it comes to textile grievances and rights along the supply chain, as well as the Tagesschau<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Support clubs like<\/span><\/span><\/span> FEMNET<\/a><\/p>\n

Talk about these topics in your circle of friends and at work<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

And especially:<\/span><\/span><\/span> Stop buying cheap sh*it!<\/h3>\n

How can we reduce\/prevent child labor?<\/span><\/span> By paying parents decently.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

PS: The International Labor Organization estimates the number of working children at 160 million and assumes that 50 percent of them are under twelve years old.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Bangladesh has huge importance as a textile producing country.<\/span><\/span> For fast fashion as well as for luxury brands.<\/span><\/span> This global importance MUST finally be reflected in the respect and wages for textile workers.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Are you ready?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

I sometimes doubt that we really want to change anything.<\/span><\/span> For the past year, we have been campaigning with the Good Clothes Fair Pay campaign to ensure that companies are obliged to pay living wages along the supply chain.<\/span><\/span> We would have needed 1 million votes in Europe.<\/span><\/span> We received a little over 200,000.<\/span><\/span> Why is that?<\/span><\/span> The campaign was good.<\/span><\/span> There were great partners.<\/span><\/span> We were loud.<\/span><\/span> And yet this sobering result.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Let’s change that.<\/span><\/span> Stop buying cheap sh*t!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In the meantime there was a \u201cstage victory\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

Textile workers in Bangladesh are to receive more pay from December.<\/span><\/span> The government has decided this.<\/span><\/span> 190 euros were demanded for the minimum wage, which was previously 68 euros.<\/span><\/span> Now it will be increased by at least 60 percent to 106 euros per month.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And now?<\/p>\n

Sounds good at first, but it’s not that easy.<\/span><\/span> Because now factory owners (there are around 3,500 factories in Bangladesh) are turning to <\/span><\/span><\/span> H&M<\/a>, ZARA SA<\/a> & Co. to get financial help for the additional costs caused by the increased wages.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Some major fashion brands such as<\/span><\/span><\/span> adidas<\/a>, Hugo Boss and Levi Strauss & Co.<\/a> had announced in an open letter in recent weeks and months that they wanted to “commit to the implementation of responsible purchasing practices”.<\/span><\/span> Factory owners therefore hope that they will keep their word and bear the increased wage costs.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

That also sounds good, but it’s not easy either.<\/span><\/span> Despite these announcements, there are still tough price wars between factory owners and customers.<\/span><\/span> They are still not prepared to pay higher prices and are threatening to change suppliers.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

For this reason:<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

This stage victory for the textile workers must not end in a catastrophe, with the large fashion companies shirking their responsibility and continuing to produce cheaply in another country.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

ZARA SA<\/a> @ca<\/a> @hm<\/a> @primark<\/a> @zalando<\/a> @esprit<\/a> @aldinord<\/a> \u2013 take responsibility for the workers who make your goods.<\/span><\/span> Pay lower management salaries, save on your marketing measures and give the textile workers what they deserve:<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

A WAGE THAT YOU CAN LIVE ON.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And that’s exactly why the protests continue.<\/span><\/span> A minimum wage of 195 euros is not too much to ask.<\/span><\/span> Numerous factories remain closed.<\/span><\/span> The workers are on the streets demanding the wage increase they deserve.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n
